Director - Medical Affairs - Genomic Health - Tokyo


Job description
The overall objective of this Medical Director is to provide medical leadership in the team effort of bringing Genomic Health’s personalized medicine diagnostic tests to cancer patients in Japan, which involves pursuing strategies to achieve public and/or private sector reimbursement for the Oncotype DX assays in breast, colon and prostate cancer.

The Medical Director is responsible for peer-to-peer interactions with academic Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) for education and research purposes. KOL engagements include collaborating with investigators on strategic clinical studies, which may be sponsored by either Genomic Health or the investigator. In addition, the Medical Director is responsible for presenting medical information to public and private sector health policy directors, with the goal of pursuing product reimbursement. These initiatives are expected to include identifying opportunities to inform medical technology assessment reviews, influencing development of consensus guidelines, and supporting health economic evaluations. This individual serves as a high-level strategic medical liaison between these external entities in Japan and our internal medical, commercial, and executive teams based in the US.


Medical oncology expertise as a subject matter expert combined with an in-depth knowledge of medical reimbursement for new medical technologies is highly preferred. Experience in industry-sponsored and independent study clinical trials within clinical oncology is also strongly preferred. Individuals having an existing network of KOL relationships in the area of breast cancer are highly desired. A working knowledge of genomics and diagnostics within clinical oncology is beneficial. Refined communication skills and organizational management are required to work in a highly matrixed organizational structure, with primary responsibility to a medical affairs lead and alignment with a commercial lead within the International Business Unit of the company. Travel is required. MD is preferred.

Responsibilities:

Serve as company Medical Monitor for all Japan-based clinical studies
Serve as Medical Advisor to Japanese Medical Societies and/or research groups on national studies investigating Oncotype DX
Provide medical oversight for clinical experience programs in Japan
Develop and manage top-tier KOL relationships across Japan working in partnership with the country manager
Receive, evaluate, refine, and manage independent study proposals from KOLs with input and feedback from company’s medical, bio-statistical, and commercial representatives
Deliver medical presentations as required to physician and policy expert audiences in support of medical-commercial educational objectives
Lead and manage KOL faculty speakers for company-sponsored Leadership Forums and Advisory Board Meetings
Develop and conduct medical training for distributors’ sales & marketing groups
Review/translate/adapt Japanese promotional/training materials and programs to ensure medical accuracy and appropriateness
Provide medical support to the development of marketing plans for all products in Japan
Provide customer service support as a medical expert and liaison to Japanese physicians with questions on individual patient Oncotype DX assay results
Attend all key regional and global medical meetings/symposia (e.g., ASCO, SABCS, etc.) to represent Genomic Health and to gather and report competitive and educational information

Qualifications:

MD, preferably medical oncologist with expertise in clinical research and medical communications, and fluency in interpreting oncology clinical trial results and bio-statistical methods
Bilingual (Japanese/English) with excellent business communication skills across cultures and deep understanding of Japanese medical practices
5-10 year industry experience with large, global biopharma company
Japan-based and willing to travel 50-70% of time
Strong public speaking capabilities as a medical expert
