Director - International Business Development, JAPA - American Express - Tokyo


Job description
Key Responsibilities: • Contribute to the development of the IBD strategy from conception through to execution, keeping abreast of market dynamics, competitor and partner activities in relevant industries • Act as a thought leader and key business partner to local market Country Managers and their teams • Support the development of deals and project pipelines by identifying and evaluating potential opportunities • Perform initial assessment of new business opportunities and develop a recommendation on whether the opportunities should be pursued.
This will include gathering market and/or competitive information, collecting relevant input from internal subject matter experts and stakeholders and working with Finance to perform preliminary analysis • Develop plan and perform day to day management of multiple deals and projects, leading working teams and preparing updates for senior decision makers • Drive strategic thinking and business development tactics, in conjunction with senior leaders (centrally and locally) and direct reports, to identify, pursue and successfully negotiate target deals on preferred commercial and contractual terms • Prepare and deliver presentations and proposals to internal stakeholders and business partners • Lead and/or support all aspects of deal negotiation (depending on deal complexity and local market resource availability), ensuring necessary approvals, appropriate contractual provisions and due diligence processes • Work closely with Corporate Development in execution of relevant transactions • Create a strong network of contacts with required subject matter expertise • Successfully hand off signed deals to relevant central and local market teams for implementation or post implementation This role may be subject to additional background verification checks.

Preferred Qualifications

QualificationsAbility to act as a strategic thought leader with the gravitas to partner with Japan Country Manager and other senior leaders in the local markets • Ability to convert strategy into clear, actionable tactics and bring deals and initiatives to successful closure • Sufficient knowledge and understanding of consumer card and rewards economics and dynamics • Sufficient knowledge of the payments space, technology, internet and mobile business preferred • External orientation with the ability to perceive, assess and deliver partner requirements and customer needs • 8 – 10 years of relevant experience in business development, consulting or corporate development • Demonstrated People Leadership experience to lead a small, high performing team will be an advantage • Excellent influencing and partner management skills necessary to build strong relationships • Outstanding matrix management skills, with the ability to engage and lead cross-functional teams across the organisation without direct reporting lines • Ability to multi-task and prioritise across diverse requirements and deliver to partner-driven timeframes • Strong will-to-win, self starter • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to manage the matrix and work across multiple markets • Good understanding of business practice in Japan and the ability to interact with native Japanese speaking external partners • The role includes some travel
